La Biscotte | Nosfell

(entry by Anne)

.

----------------------------------------------------------------

Don’t try to find influences. No one could characterise UFO Nosfell’s style
without misrepresenting it. He goes from a hollow tone to shrill intonations
with a disconcerting easiness. He created a personnal universe where his
voice is an instrument in the same way as Pierre le Bourgeois’s violoncello
and guitar. Nosfell comes from the Klokochazia (needless to search it on a
map, this land doesn’t exist !) and has ever win over French public with his
two albums, « Pomaïe klokochazia balek » and « Kälin bla lemsnit dünfel
labyanit »
.

Today's Brew |The Besnard Lakes

Here's another band that calls Montreal, their home.
Under The Radar lists them as one of their favorite new bands of 2007.
P' Folks gave their album a score of 8.2, which isn't bad. As P' folk wrote, "...they opened the Unicorns' 2004 North American tour, while singer/guitarist Jace Lasek's Break Glass Studio produced Wolf Parade's Apologies to the Queen Mary and Sunset Rubdown's Shut Up I Am Dreaming-- but never tasted it themselves."

Could be all hype, but I think there's definitely something, and so far from what I've heard, this could be a promising year for the other Montreal band known as The Besnard Lakes.

From their album "The Besnard Lakes Are The Dark Horse":

Today's Brew | Explosions in the Sky

The reflective instrumental quartet from Austin, Texas return with a new album.
Music to meditate, study, make love, go on road trips, and trip out on.

Today's Brew | LA Weekly: Grizzly Bear

If you haven't already read the article, it's worth checkin' out.
LA Weekly's subheading reads Meet Grizzly Bear, indie rock’s best “gay-straight-straight-straight quadrant”. LA Weekly talked to Droste and bandmate Daniel Rossen about sonics, vocals, the gay press and other topics of urgent interest.

(LA Weekly article by Alec Hanley Bemis)

LA Weekly: Hey, you have your own genre! A related question: Do the lyrics connect to the fact that Ed is something of a rarity — a gay indie rocker in a scene that can be very asexual?

DROSTE: “Plans” is about a boy, and that’s about it. [“Juan from Argentina, such a strange predicament we find ourselves in/Baby it’s a long way to South America . . .”] The first album [2004’s Horn of Plenty] is definitely more about gay-centric relationships.

LA Weekly: A few months back, though, a very gay-centric interview between you and Owen Pallet from Final Fantasy and the Arcade Fire did make its way around the Internet.

DROSTE: That wasn’t meant for everyone to read. I don’t regret doing it — I’ve done a bunch of gay press — but when things get posted on the Web and people start Googling, suddenly a story meant for one audience is in general circulation. All of a sudden, journalists start asking about it.

ROSSEN: We are a gay-straight-straight-straight quadrant.

DROSTE: Quadrant? Bloc Party’s lead singer, Kele, just came out of the closet, so you know . . . add another one to the list! [Fake enthusiasm.] Yeah, sweet. [Everyone laughs loudly.]

Second Cup | The Low Lows

This week, The Take-Away Show from La Blogotheque feature The Low Lows. I find the whole series of videos by La Blogotheque fascinating, as they find clever ways to bring live performances on video in its rawness. Especially with public interaction.

La Biscotte | An Pierlé

As we mentioned last Friday, we welcomed Anne (from Kawaii) as our featured guest resident blogger here at ADD. We thought we give her own cool series title name, sorta running with the theme of coffee. As we've been attempting to do at this site. And as we also mentioned last week, her entries will be bilingual- both in French and English.

(all text below by Anne)

nouveau projet An Pierlé and White Velvet, un duo avec Koen Gisen. Mais
c’est un titre de son second album, Helium Sunset (2002) que vous pourrez
écouter aujourd’hui…

__________________________________________________________________________

An Pierlé is a Belgian singer. She played the piano since she was 9 years old
and she obviously never stopped since then. With her classic education and
her intimistbewitching voice, she could have became one big name of Belgian
light music. But she didn’t. The lady enjoys eclectic and sophisticated ambiances. After having played alone for several years, An Pierlé has received praise from the critics with her new project An Pierlé and White Velvet, a duo with Koen Gisen. But that’s a title from her second album that you can listen to today…

Today's Brew | Au Revoir Simone

Okay, I'm definitely really late in the game on this one. I've heard their name buzzin around the past year, but never really got around to listening to them. Their new album "The Bird of Music" is set to be released in early March. (first, as an import? according to Amazon.com). Strange, since the keyboard-driven band is based in NY, i suppose that seems to be the trend of late.

Today's Brew | Mansfield TYA

We'd like to welcome La Loutre (aka Anne) from the French outfit Kawaii as our featured guest resident blogger.
She'll be bringing a fresh new flavor to our site, particularly music from Europe, and at times from her own native country, France. So we're really excited to have her on board and we'll feature an entry by her once a week, and another interesting spin to this featured entry will be--it'll be bilingual. There might be a very slight disparity and variation between the French to English translation, but we hope to make the adjustments in the coming weeks.
Hopefully, those who know a little French, can brush up in your lingusitic skills.

_______________________________________________________________

These two ladies must be the most singular female duo of French present
music production : Mansfield TYA takes their name from June Mansfield, Anaïs Nin’s friend and the wife of Henri Miller, that American writer whose books considered too pornographic had been censored in the last century. The scene is set. With her flayed alive voice, Julia describes disappointed love stories’ with spleen and melancholy. In French or in English, Julia and Carla
build the intimist and dark ambiances of their folk-rock ballades. According
to their moods, the electric guitar flirts with the baroque strings of the
violin, piano or indian harmonium romantic and soft melodies. It can make
you think to Cat Power, Shannon Wright or Cassidy sisters from CocoRosie.

Guest Blogger- CBJ: On PB & J at Fingerprints

So since I was unable to go to this show, I coerced my friend Cowbell Junkie to write a quick blurb of the show as she took some pics, and vid (via YouTube).

PB+J came out to Long Beach's Fingerprints Friday night for a very
short and intimate performance. The only way of getting in was if you
had a cute yellow wristband completely customized with their initials
and a drawn image of an old typewriter.

Sadly, there was no sign of Victoria and the 30-minute acoustic set consisted of the 3 guys just jamming along for a handful loving fans. They played 4 songs from Writer's Blocks, including Amsterdam, Paris 2004, Objects of Affection, and Young Folks.

The last song was an old (American?) folk song, which Peter said was one of the first songs he ever learned. Although the acoustics minimalized PB+J's textured, harmonious, and dreamy sound, it didn't stop the crowd from singing along, clapping to percussion, and whistling.

Peter became Bjorn and Bjorn became Peter– a joke that started because of Bjorn having mic problems andconstantly wanting to switch places with Peter. Their humor really set the show off with a lighthearted air. Who knew these Swedes were so playful! Yes, they forgot some lyrics and teased each other in Swedish, but it was their mess-ups and informality that made the night so friendly.

Unfortunately I won't be attending, which I was really looking forward t going, but due to conflict in schedule, I have a couple of friends who will be.
