Today's Brew | Hammer Current Exhibits

We interrupt our regular scheduled entry for a non-music entry.
A show worth checkin' out if you live in the southern California area.

Vija Celmins: A Drawings Retrospective
January 28 - April 22, 2007

Vija Celmins
Untitled (Big Sea #1)
1969
Graphite on acrylic ground on paper

"...the exhibition will include exemplars of Celmins's most important series, including her delicate renderings of lunar, ocean, and desert surfaces as well as clouds, galaxies, and nocturnal skies. Depicted with exquisite, mesmerizing detail, her works often present a spatial ambiguity that challenges notions of realism while engaging with larger questions of perception and knowledge." (text from the Hammer)

Ezra Johnson
January 12 - May 6, 2007

Ezra Johnson
What Visions Burn
2006
DVD. 22:27 min.

"Ezra Johnson's new animated low-tech digital film, What Visions Burn (2006), uses lushly colored paintings and collaged figures to tell the story of a pair of art thieves in New York City. The animation is a laborious process, as Johnson paints and repaints the surface of his canvases to create each frame of the film, which uses visual elements and sound effects to narrate the scenario. Johnson's amusing depictions of the art world's many characters and his poetic representations of the city tell a story both romantic and unexpected." (text from the Hammer)
